Vintage Teddy Bear’s Picnic Cake Smash

Posted on 3 May, 2020 by Sarah Hart

Many times I receive bookings for a cake smash session where the parents are very happy for me to suggest a colour scheme. But sometimes, a parent will come to me with a clear idea of what they would like from the session. Millie’s mum asked me to create a teddy bear’s picnic cake smash with a vintage feel. I loved the idea and it’s always exciting for me as a photographer to do something a little bit unique.

It turned out that Millie’s mummy had a lot of bits and pieces at home that she was able to bring with her. Millie, lucky girl, has a lot of teddy bears which were of course invited to her teddy bear’s picnic cake smash! Her mummy also brought along a gorgeous wooden tea set and a lovely floral bunting set with Millie’s name on it.

I picked out a cream backdrop and added in a crate to display teddies on and I also have a gorgeous Hamley’s hamper basket. Millie’s mum chose the floral romper set that I hold in my girl’s collection of cake smash outfits. The only thing left to arrange was the cake. Millie suffers with an egg allergy which is no problem for my lovely cake maker, Denise, owner of Cakes Unlimited UK. However, it did limit the style of cake that we could use. We opted for a gorgeous pink swirl ombre cake (which when cut into smelled divine – made with golden syrup).

At all of my cake smash sessions, I take images of your little one BEFORE the cake comes out. So, there’s always a few simple portrait images of your little one before they get messy.

So following the birthday girl’s portraits, the cake came out! Millie was definitely one of my daintier eaters! She enjoyed the taste, was a little unsure to begin with (“What mummy? I can really eat this cake?!”). But gradually felt more at ease taking a bit or two!

Splash Time

The final part of my cake smashes include splash time in a little tub. Many babies love splashing around in the tub (and also getting clean before they go home!).
