Space Theme Cake Smash

When Rowan’s mummy called me to enquire about a cake smash for her soon to be 1 year old, she asked whether I had any space theme cake smash outfits or props. The answer was no, but as always, I love designing a cake smash around a theme. So I started hunting round for space theme cake smash ideas!

Pinterest is a great place to start and I found a few ideas on there for inspiration. Usually, with a cake smash, I’ll start with the outfit and build out from there. But this time, I started with the backdrop. I have a navy backdrop, so wanted to use this (it’s a bit more of a baby-friendly colour than black). Then I created the planets – hand-painting them on thick paper and cutting them out to blue tac on to the backdrop.

Then I started looking for an outfit for Rowan to wear. I found this fabulous pants, bow-tie and braces set from an Etsy seller Sew Unique Prop Bowtique. I’m super impressed with the quality of this set and really lovely the vibrant colours in the fabric. It makes a lovely addition to my cake smash outfits that I store at the Sarah Hart Photography studio. (Click to see all my Boy and Girl cake smash outfits)

I asked my lovely cake maker, Denise from Cakes Unlimited UK, to design me a cake that would include the planets around the cake. I also wanted the soft buttercream icing (not fondant which is harder for the babies to delve in to). And she didn’t disappoint! How awesome is this cake?!

Rowan loved his cake smash and dived in to the cake (I can’t blame him). And all that was left was for me to add a touch of Photoshop magic after the cake smash session…. I added a digital overlay to help really enhance the outer space effects!

All my cake smashes finish up with tub-time – a chance for a splash in the bubbles (and it means they get to go home clean!)
