Choosing colours for your newborn session

Posted on 22 Jan, 2023 by Sarah Hart

Choosing colours for your newborn session can seem a little daunting! There’s a huge variety of blankets and wraps to choose from at my newborn photography sessions, so prior to their visit, I often ask clients to pick out their favourite newborn images from my website. This gives me a flavour of the types of poses you love, the props you may like and your colour preferences.

My aim is not to provide you with a gallery of images in all different colours of the rainbow! In fact, I try to keep to 2 or 3 colour choices. Why? Well, having a colour scheme for your newborn photography shoot helps the images coordinate later when you put them on the walls of your home, or should you want to create a collage.

When choosing colours before your newborn session, have a think about the following:

  • Where you are going to display your newborn’s portraits? Pick colours that match your home decor and where your images will sit beautifully with your colour schemes.
  • Bring along clothing for your family portraits that co-ordinate with one another. You can choose colours that are already in your wardrobe – there’s no need to go out and buy. I often recommend keeping to muted colours or neutrals so that we can choose a coloured wrap to swaddle your baby and to work alongside your wardrobe colour choices.
  • What time of year has your baby been born? You may want to incorporate seasonal colour choices at your newborn session, e.g. red and green for a festive feel, or lemons for a spring baby
  • If you are in any doubt, stick with neutrals or all-white – you really can’t go wrong here as you’ll be able to use these images in any room of your home! And you can always add a pop of colour in to a few of the images.

Neutrals

I’ll often have the studio ready with a neutral coloured backdrop to start the session (unless you’ve already told me you love bold, bright colours!) But are you drawn more towards warm beige neutrals or cooler greys? Take a look below and see what you prefer….

Pinks & Violets

These colours make very obvious choices for newborn baby girls. But there’s plenty of choice in the different shades, and whilst some parents prefer the softer muted tones, other prefer the bolder colour palettes.

Blues

Blues are gorgeous colour for both baby boys and girls and are a firm favourite with clients.

Green

Green is my favourite colour! In fact I get a little excited when a client also shares that they love greens. You’ll find different greens available at the studio, from olive green to forest green. They work really well with warm neutral tones.

Yellow

This is probably one of the fewest requested colours but how can you not look at these images and feel happy?!

Bolder colour choices for your newborn

Sometimes, I get clients who love the more rich, bold colours and are happy to be a little more adventurous and step away from the neutrals!

Having my little ones photographed by Sarah was the best decision I ever made. They really don’t stay small for long so capturing them in those first few weeks is so precious! Being able to look at those teeny tiny toes forever is priceless
